Remember last spring when three Contra Costa County schools started a Unified basketball league? (If not, click here to see!) Well it’s back and better than ever! Six different high schools that compete in the Bay Valley Athletic League in Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley and Pittsburg are playing Unified basketball. They’re making waves across the country!
We were also thrilled that the Contra Costa Times covered the Unified league. Click here to read all about it!
Even though it’s their first season, the students and staff at Pittsburg High School are so into Unified basketball that they created a hashtag – #PittUnify – and it’s been trending all over Twitter! Many of the schools are doing great things around the games like an R-word campaign, having students as volunteers and fans in the stands.
When you couple Unified sports with whole-school activities like those – you get lasting change. This isn’t just about a one-off basketball game. It’s about students working together to make their schools more respectful places, and Special Olympics Northern California is thrilled!
We’ll have more for you on this stellar league in the coming weeks, but until then, happy reading and viewing! If you want to see our video from when it all started, enjoy!
