After Bay Area Games, Ms. Bertrand of Stanley Middle School sent us a heartwarming email:
“I wanted to thank you for all of your help getting us set up with the Special Olympics Schools Partnership Program this year. The Unified Peer Relay was an absolute highlight for our athletes, peers and staff. It was an amazing day!”
With a response such as that, we just HAD to ask is Ms. Bertrand would be willing to do a Q&A – and she obliged!
Our Unified Schools: How many years have involved with Special Olympics Northern California Schools Partnership Program?
Ms. Bertrand: Stanley has been involved for the past three years (including this year).
Our Unified Schools: What does your class love best about having Special Olympics in their classroom?
VB: They love the recognition of being successful athletes and the excitement of the event. This year, we invited our peer tutors, and my students really enjoyed their support and participation. My peer tutors loved being there and feel that this was an opportunity that they will never forget. My students always love the award ceremony and having their photo taken with a police officer. It was an added highlight to have a photo taken with an armed force representative as well. The gold medal they receive has always meant a great deal to my students.
Our Unified Schools: What kind of difference have you seen the Schools Partnership Program make?
VB: Special Olympics in schools boosts self esteem and fosters teamwork.
Our Unified Schools: What was the best part of Bay Area Games for your class?
VB: My students and peer tutors all shared that the Unified Peer Relay was their highlight this year.
Our Unified Schools: How did your students respond to Bay Area Games?
VB: They were very excited overall. They worked hard preparing for the games and the outcome was fantastic.
Our Unified Schools: What would you tell other teachers about the Schools Partnership Program?
VB: Do not hesitate to sign up. Bay Area Games and the Schools Partnership Program is an important part of providing our students with well-rounded education – for those receiving special education as well as general education students.
Our Unified Schools: Is there anything else you’d like to share?
VB: I would like to thank Ashley Papenbrock of Special Olympics Northern California and Contra Costa County TSA Sherri Roberti for their excellent communication and organization. We are looking forward to participating again next year!
