Why This APE Specialist Loves Special Olympics

We’re back in Nevada for today’s edition of Testimonial Tuesday, where we get feedback from those who participate in our Schools Partnership Program. Today’s writer is Leslie Wright, who is an adapted physical education specialist with Clark County School District, and she helps Clark County schools participate in the Special Olympics Nevada Schools Partnership Program.

“I love Special Olympics in schools! It is a wonderful way for my students to get moving and improve their social and communication skills. They are able to practice specific skills, become better, and increase their confidence and self-esteem. They get to engage in physical activities instead of sitting around playing video games, on the internet, or watching TV.

They can participate with their peers in a positive setting that promotes important life skills for both the athlete and the peer. My own children also love to participate in Special Olympic programs. They love to help and set an example as a peer and they get to meet new friends. Most importantly they learn to value the differences in others.”
